Hello and welcome to Jay’s Game Reviews! Today I am reviewing Shinou Game Studio‘s Indie game Hunger Apartment.

hunger 1Hunger Apartment is an Indie game that takes place within the confines of an apartment building. A cast of oddball characters that the player will move about the building performing various small tasks. The game has a dark feel to it that has the potential to draw the player in, but read on to find out just how drawn in I mean.

PROS:

  • hunger 2Cheap. The game costs $2.99 on the Steam store. I got it at a discount of $2.49, which is not unheard of on Steam.
  • Dark. The game sets the mood well by taking the player through darkened rooms and the use of light and shadow sets a foreboding and ominous overall tone.

CONS:

  • Boring. Granted, I did not play the game for very long, but from what I did experience, the player walks up some steps and delivers items or collects items while dodging hands that reach out of the floor. I just did not find it very enjoyable overall.
  • Deaths. I found that after walking up the four flights of steps while dodging hands and delivering packages that if you hit a hand near the end you get sent all the way back. This is very annoying and really takes a lot of fun out of the game. I could understand restarting the floor as a penalty, but from the bottom really sucks.
  • Slowness. Part of the reason that the game is so boring is the lack of a sprint key. the player moves at a snail’s pace, and when you’r going up the steps it feels like it takes forever!
  • Fetching. Nothing worse in video games than when the developer has no good quest ideas and inserts fetch quests. Nothing worse except when the whole game uses this technique.

hunger 3Hunger Apartment has the potential to be a great game but really drops the ball by adding fetch quests and not having a sprint key. If the developer at least added a sprint function I would consider trying it again, but for now, I found the game boring and lacking any type of enjoy-ability. The game feels like it could be so much more; and the ambiance is set perfectly for a dark and macabre experience. Unfortunately it is dull and unimaginative.

Does this weeks game sound interesting to you? You can pick up Hunger Apartment for yourself on Steam right now and play for yourself.

I Rate this adventure 36 out of 100
